Guide to Washing & Shrouding (Mandi & Kafan)
A complete procedural guide for preparing, washing (Ghusl), and shrouding (Kafan) a deceased Muslim according to the Sunnah and Shafi'i Mazhab in Singapore.
Washing a deceased brother or sister is a sacred trust. Handlers must preserve total privacy and never disclose any physical blemish or condition observed. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever washes a deceased person and conceals his secrets, Allah will forgive him forty times." (Al-Hakim)
Who May Perform the Washing (Mahram & Gender Boundaries)
For a Deceased Male:
Should be washed by trustworthy male relatives (father, sons, brothers) or pious male practitioners. A wife may also wash her deceased husband in the Shafi'i Mazhab.
For a Deceased Female:
Must be washed by trustworthy female relatives (mother, daughters, sisters) or female Ustazahs. A husband may also wash his deceased wife.

Place the deceased on the wash table covered from navel to knee with a thick, opaque cloth (Kain Basahan).
Gently press the lower abdomen with a cloth-gloved hand to expel residual body wastes.
Perform Istinja' (cleansing private areas) using running water without looking directly at or touching the 'Awrah with bare hands.
Gently clean the nostrils, mouth, and teeth with a moist cloth wrapped around fingers.

Shrouding an Adult Male (3 Plain White Wraps)
According to the Sunnah, a deceased male is shrouded in three large white cloths of identical size that envelope the entire body.
Layering Order for Men:
- Lay down 3 to 5 fastening cloth ties horizontally across the table.
- Spread the first large white sheet, then sprinkle camphor powder and fragrance.
- Spread the second and third white sheets on top of one another.
- Place the deceased onto the shroud and fold the left side over, then the right side over.
- Secure the ties loosely at the head, chest, waist, knees, and feet.
